South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer sat down with On3’s JD PicKell on The Hard Count. The two discussed a variety of topics from South Carolina football to college football as a whole, but when PicKell asked Beamer about the return of his quarterback and wide receiver duo of Spencer Rattler and Antwane Wells, he couldn’t help but be enthusiastic.

“Excitement, without a doubt,” Beamer said. “One because they’re great young men, like I love being around them. Spencer’s awesome, he and I were obviously together at Oklahoma and got a great relationship.”

Rattler transferred to South Carolina from Oklahoma last offseason, and as their starting quarterback led the Gamecocks to an 8-5 record, their best since 2019. He threw for 3,026 yards and 18 touchdown passes, many of which were to his favorite target Juice Wells.

“And Juice is just an awesome person, awesome personality, does so many things for our program,” Beamer said.

Wells led the Gamecocks in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches last season after transferring in like Rattler, but from James Madison. He ended the year with 68 receptions for 928 yards and 6 touchdown grabs.

“So for those guys to be coming back as people I was excited about obviously, and then what they did on the field, they’re two great players that make their teammates better,” Beamer said. “And we’ve got a lot of great players coming back around both those guys which we’re fired up about.”

The duo really heated up at the end of the season. In the last five games, Wells had a pair of two-touchdown games as well as three games with over 100 receiving yards. And in their two biggest wins to end the regular season over No. 5 Tennessee and No. 8 Clemson, the two accounted for 308 yards on 20 catches by Wells, two of which were for touchdowns.

“But certainly Spencer and Juice and the way they finished the season, they really were playing as well as any quarterback/wide receiver duo in the country, and we can continue to build on that,” Beamer said.

Beamer added one more win to South Carolina’s record in his second season, and will surely be looking to take another leap in his third year at the helm in Columbia. And there’s no question that his marquee quarterback and wide receiver tandem returning will help in the cause.
