Shane Beamer and South Carolina definitely have a tall task ahead of them as they take on No. 1 ranked Georgia at home this weekend, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The Bulldogs defense terrorized offenses all of last season, and seem to have picked right back up where they left off this year. Beamer spoke about his strategy regarding the offense this week in their matchup, and was asked if he planned on throwing the whole kitchen sink at UGA’s defense.

“I think if you do that you can end up hurting yourself a little bit too, I mean we want to continue to condense what we do offensively and just make sure that we’re sound,” Beamer explained. “However number of plays we have, we know as an offense how we’re gonna be able to block it and run routes against these multiple looks that we’re going to get. As opposed to having too many schemes, you can’t rep it all against all the stuff that you’re gonna see from them.”

Beamer is focused on simplifying his offense in order to manage the expectation of looks that can be presented by Georgia’s defense, but also knows the Bulldogs could change some of their defensive looks up on Saturday.

“So you really just try and dive in and have an idea of what you’re going to expect, but knowing how multiple they are. Whatever they did on third down against Oregon and Samford, you’re probably gonna see a completely new third down package from them for us. So it’s just working on ourselves and being good,” Beamer said.

Beamer was also asked if he felt like the Gamecocks needed to play near flawless, offensive football when facing a defense the caliber of UGA’s.

“I think we gotta play smart football and efficient, and that’s one thing that we haven’t done the first two weeks. We’ve done some really good things offensively the first two games, but we’ve had way too many negative plays, we’ve had way too many drops, we’ve had way too many turnovers,” Beamer said. “When you talk about negative things on offense, we’ve had way too many of those the last two games. And then you could say the same things defensively the last game with mental errors and missed tackles.”

It sounds like smart football is more of the mantra this week for the Gamecocks versus flawless, as they face a defense that’s given up just three points in their first two weeks of action. But Beamer knows more than anything that if they want to win this Saturday’s game, they’ll have to make winning plays.

“So we’ve gotta have a lot more winning reps, winning plays if you will, than we’ve had the last two weeks as well. And just have those winning plays and just try and stack one on top of another and see where we are at the end of the day,” Beamer said.
