Spring practices gave college football coaches across the country a chance to evaluate their roster and needs heading into the season. And the transfer portal has now allowed coaches to fulfill those needs and add new players to their teams accordingly.

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer was recently asked what the Gamecocks’ biggest needs are now that spring practice is behind them, but couldn’t pinpoint one specific position.

“I would say just really continuing to add depth everywhere, at some point you run our of scholarships, but we’re got scholarships available right now,” Beamer said. “And as long as we do, we’re going to continue trying to make our roster better.”

Beamer already bettered his roster this offseason adding eight different transfer portal additions to his team this year. The offense seems to be the point of emphasis so far, with only one of those eight players lining up on the defensive side of the ball. Regardless, Beamer didn’t shy away from the fact that there are multiple position groups across the board that he’d like to add some players to.

“Certainly there are some positions that don’t have the depth that we would like to have right now from a numbers standpoint, and there’s more than one, but that’s part of it as continue to try and build this program to where we want to be,” Beamer said.

It appears like Beamer is happy with his starters, but would like to bolster up the depth underneath them. The Gamecocks hope that the depth of their roster won’t be tested this upcoming season, but the season is a long one, and injuries along with other circumstances almost always unfortunately impact its outcome.

“I like where we are today, if the season started today and who was on our team I feel great about,” Beamer said. “But if we have the opportunity to add some other people down the stretch, which we’re trying to do, we will.”

The spring transfer portal window was closed on April 30, barring any other new student-athletes from entering the portal. Beamer and his staff will now evaluate the remaining players in the transfer portal and potentially add some finishing touches to their roster before their summer workout program begins.

The Gamecocks may not secure a commitment from a new, flashy starter, but will work towards Beamer’s vision of building depth and bettering his team.
