Spring practices are underway around the country. That includes for the South Carolina Gamecocks, who are already battling a few injuries and have multiple players that are going to be out for Spring practice.

While meeting with the media at the start of the week, head coach Shane Beamer shared an injury update. However, he had to do so without reading off the injury report and instead went by memory because, as he joked, he had forgotten to bring it to his press conference.

“I just walked out of the staff meeting,” Shane Beamer joked. “And I had the injury report. I was gonna bring it down here and, of course, I forgot it as well.”

There are four Gamecocks who won’t be able to go this Spring. Tight end Michael Smith, defensive lineman Caleb Williams, offensive lineman Ryan Brubaker, and offensive lineman Damola Ajidahun are all going to miss the Spring.

“Michael Smith will not go through spring practice at tight end. Caleb Williams will not go through spring practice on the defensive line. Ryan Brubaker will not go through spring practice on the offensive line,” Beamer said. “And Damola, our freshman offensive lineman on the offensive line, will not go through spring practice. So, unfortunately, those four guys are out for spring with some injury things that, you know, we wanted to go ahead and get done now, so they’d be ready to go for the season.”

Smith is a sophomore who played in 12 games last season for South Carolina. Williams and Ajidahun are both freshmen who enrolled early at South Carolina. Then, Brubaker comes with the most college experience. A redshirt junior, he’s dealt with knee injuries in the past and has consistently made the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Shane Beamer didn’t get into any specifics about the injuries that any of the players suffered. However, he does seem optimistic that everyone will be able to return before the season and potentially even in minor roles earlier than that.

“They all will be. Optimistic that maybe a couple of guys will be able to do a little bit more towards the end of spring practice,” Beamer said. “But right now they won’t start with us and we’ll see how it goes as we go through the spring. But other than that, everybody is in good shape.”

Going through the rest of Spring without suffering any new injuries will be a goal for Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks moving forward. Fans will get their opportunity to see the team at the annual Spring Game on Friday, April 18th.
