The SEC is known for wild top-ranked matchups regardless of the sport. And on Saturday, on the diamond, there was a clash between the No. 22 ranked Missouri Tigers and No. 11 South Carolina Gamecocks. The game needed extra innings to be decided, but the Gamecocks pulled out the narrow victory at the end with this walk-off hit.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning, freshman infielder and right-handed pitcher Ethan Petry stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. On a 1-1 count, Petry knocked the ball straight up the middle where the Tigers’ defense had a gap in their coverage. That hit was good enough for a base hit and for the freshmen to call game. You can see Petry’s walk-off single in the video below.

This was game three of the three-game series between the two SEC east squads. And South Carolina picked up walk-off victories against Missouri. The first was in game one of the series.

On Friday night, the Gamecocks reached the bottom of the ninth inning down 8-6. After a series of untimely miscues by Missouri pitchers, South Carolina was able to pick up three runs ending the game with a single infield courtesy of Michael Braswell.

In the Gamecocks Saturday’s walk-off victory, the game had a similar flavor to the one the night before. However, this time it did not take a wild late-game run from South Carolina to get the win. On Saturday, both teams were knotted up at 4-4 heading into the ninth inning. Both clubhouses’ pitching and defense were more on point the second time around, delivering three straight, six in total on the night, scoreless innings. But yet again, for Missouri, untimely pitching and defensive gaffes put them in a precarious position they could not get out of.

In the bottom of the 12th, the Tigers walked Willn Triplett on a full count. And then a throwing error allowed Braylen Wimmer to take a base. Missouri intentionally walked Gavin Casas to load the bases for South Carolina. And that’s when Petry called game with his single up the middle to give the Gamecocks the walk-off 5-4 victory.

With the win, South Carolina advances to 23-2 on the season and remains undefeated in the SEC at 6-0. The Gamecocks swept their series against the Tigers, walking-off in two of the three games. Next for South Carolina will be a Tuesday night game on the road against The Citadel. The opening pitch for that game is scheduled for 6 PM CT and can be seen on ESPN+ using the ESPN app.
