South Carolina has four quarterbacks who are freshman, redshirt or true, competing in their room behind QB LaNorris Sellers. One of those is out, though, in now ending his short career in Columbia.

QB Dante Reno plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. That comes per reporting this morning by Pete Nakos and Hayes Fawcett at On3.

“Gamecock Nation, thank you for everything,” Reno told GamecockCentral’s Mike Uva as well. “This wasn’t an easy decision. South Carolina is a special place, and it’s because of the people. That will never change.”

Reno made one appearance for them as a true freshman, with him going on to redshirt, last fall against Akron. Most of his snaps were then coming on the scout team for the Gamecocks. Now, after a second spring in the program, Reno is electing to transfer elsewhere.

Reno, a native of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, would play in high school at Cheshire Academy (CT) as well as Windsor Loomis Chaffee. He finished as the No. 562 overall recruit as a three-star prospect in the 2024 cycle. He also ended up rating as a Top-35 QB in the class and the No. 5 player out of the state of Connecticut. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

With that, Reno chose the Gamecocks over Virginia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, NC State, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Iowa, West Virginia, and Louisville as well as Miami. He was their first commitment, and the only quarterback among the 16 signees, in 2024 for what finished as a Top-20 class, which South Carolina credited him in part for in helping them to recruit that group to Columbia.

However, the quarterback room has changed this offseason at South Carolina. Sellers will be the starter but they still had Reno, Cutter Woods as their lone quarterback signee in ’25, and then a walk-on in Jimmy Francis. The Gamecocks then added Air Noland, a former four-star and top-five quarterback in ’24, out of the transfer portal after spending his freshman season at Ohio State.

Reno is now the latest departure from the program during the spring cycle. DE Wendell Gregory (Oklahoma State) has already committed elsewhere while OT Kam Pringle and CB Emory Floyd are also transferring elsewhere. That brings it to a total of 20 players to transfer from the Gamecocks over this offseason.
