South Carolina quarterback Jason Brown will depart Columbia and look to finish out his collegiate eligibility elsewhere. He made the announcement that he would enter the transfer portal on Twitter on Wednesday.

Brown saw action in seven games this season, and he finished with 721 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions. He earned his first FBS start against Florida on Nov. 6, a game which ultimately turned out to be a shocking 40-17 thrashing of the Gators.

Brown was a transfer from FCS St. Francis, and he is a native of Fredericksburg, Va. The former three-star recruit arrived at South Carolina last spring after the FCS elected to move their fall 2020 season to the spring. Brown set single-season records in passing yards and passing touchdowns in the Northeast Conference in 2019.

The news from Brown comes just two days after the Gamecocks announced they would take former Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler from the transfer portal.

Rattler joins Gamecocks with high 2022 hopes

After being jilted by the Sooners in favor of freshman quarterback Caleb Williams, Rattler is reconnecting with Shane Beamer. The Gamecocks coach was on the Oklahoma staff until his hiring at South Carolina in 2021.

Though Rattler hasn’t commented on his decision yet, his long-time quarterback trainer Mike Giovando shared his thoughts with the Charlotte Observer.

“That familiarity definitely helped out,” Giovando said. “It helped to have that little bit of comfort with the guy that you have the potential to be playing for. You kind of know what (Beamer) is all about.

“The lingo, the plays, the schemes, everything about what Coach Satterfield does is based on the highest level of NFL football. I think Spence thought that was important as well. (He wanted) to get into a scheme and in a system that’s going to help (him) translate to the next level when (he) gets that opportunity.”

With plenty left to give at the collegiate level, Rattler can help turn South Carolina around with Beamer. For large parts of the season, the Gamecocks started Zeb Noland, a graduate assistant who was activated to the playing roster midway through fall camp.

The Gamecocks are now preparing to play North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, their first bowl since 2018. The game will be on Dec. 30.
