South Carolina quarterbacks LaNorris Sellers and Robby Ashford are competing for the Gamecocks’ starting job under center this offseason as fall camp is already underway in Columbia. As the two continue battling ahead of the team’s season opener against Old Dominion.

Sellers and Ashford may be pitted against one another during their position battle, but are still working towards pushing each other and elevating their respective levels of play in the process. A relationship that Sellers recently spoke about following the first four practices of camp.

“Pretty much pushing each other, like you said, but also making each other better. Like I said earlier this week, it’s a healthy competition, or last week whenever I said that,” Sellers said.

There’s no question that the two quarterbacks are at differing stages of their college careers. With Sellers entering his redshirt freshman season after appearing in three games last year for the Gamecocks and South Carolina representing Ashford’s third stop in his college career. Spending two seasons apiece at Oregon and Auburn.

“He has college experience, taking that from him. I have knowledge of the system, he’s taking that from me,” Sellers explained. “So we just still gotta go out there and do it, and compete, and just lift each other up when stuff goes bad, and then just help each other out.”

Both quarterbacks helping uplift one another and grow in their differences will only make South Carolina’s offense stronger regardless of who wins the starting job. But there’s no question that both bring traits to the table that could be exciting for the Gamecocks this season.

Sellers stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 242 pounds. A talented strong-armed passer who can also make plays with his legs. Completing all four of his passes in his limited action last season for 86 yards and a touchdown, also rushing for 51 yards and a score on the ground.

Ashford on the other hand also possesses high-level of athleticism and elite rushing ability at the quarterback position. He did not play in a single game for Oregon’s football team in his two years in Eugene, but did make 20 game appearances and 10 starts for the Ducks’ baseball team. Also making 10 starts at Auburn and 22 game appearances where he threw for 1,758 yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Carrying the ball 199 times for the Tigers with 927 yards 12 rushing touchdowns.

Sellers was QB1 coming out of spring practice where he was also named Joe Morrison Offensive Player of the Spring. As he’ll look to hold onto his starting spot during fall camp and improve his game while competing with Ashford in the process.
