South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler will be making his debut for the Gamecocks this weekend. As he preps himself for their matchup versus Georgia State, he walked through what a week of preparation looks like for him and the team with On3’s Wes Mitchell.

“So a normal game week up here we go Sunday we had an hour, 50-minute practice just getting our feet back on the grass getting loose yesterday and had about an hour lift, probably an hour and a half of meetings. Obviously, meals and everything like that, so that’d be Sunday. Monday is our off day, so this morning I went up there and watched some film with coach Coleman and [Luke] Doty. And then obviously we’ve got class and stuff like that, might go back in the evening and watch film,” Rattler said.

With the two lighter days out the way, Rattler spoke on what the days leading up to Saturdays look like.

“But then Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday it’s practice in the morning then you’re off the rest of the day till you’ve got meetings in the evening and meals and stuff like that. And then obviously we have a lift on Wednesday just to kind of get the body going and then Friday comes up, kind of like a noon practice. We’re gonna have our meals with the team, head to the hotel, have I’m sure a bunch of meetings just to get ready,” Rattler said.

Rattler detailed his mentality on gameday and spoke to the repetition of the weekly grind that comes with playing college football.

“And then Saturday’s just a jam-packed day, you know how that goes. And then fly out Saturday night, boom, right back at it Sunday going, so it’s non-stop for this next fourteen, fifteen weeks whatever it is. Personally, for me I like to just wake up, clear my mind. Just kind of chill, rest, relax, not overthink it, not overdo it in your head but definitely prepare mentally throughout the week and then especially on Saturday,” Rattler said.

Rattler was asked if he had any gameday rituals or superstitions that he partakes in on gameday, but said he likes to keep things light and relaxed on gameday, especially in matchups like this Saturday’s which is at night.

“But the thing for me is you don’t want to get too tense; just lay low, wake up, get a shower, nice hot shower get woken up, get some music in your ears. And I know we have a night game in this game, so we’re gonna have a lot of time before to play so that’s one of the hard things about those night games. You gotta focus on the game all day and I’m sure we’ll be doing walkthroughs and meals and everything like that, but really just controlling the excitement I guess you could say. But for me I’m not too superstitious, I just like to get my rest and get excited to play,” Rattler said.

Gamecock nation is definitely excited to watch Rattler perform in his much anticipated debut this weekend, with him being one of the team’s most talented acquisitions in recent history as he was ranked the No. 1 quarterback in his 2019 quarterback class according to On3 Consensus. Rattler and the Gamecocks face Georgia State at home this Saturday, September 3.
