Spencer Rattler from Heisman Trophy front runner to second-string quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners within a matter of months during the 2021 season. However, the former five-star prospect is looking for a new beginning with the South Carolina Gamecocks, joining the SEC program this offseason via the transfer portal.

Speaking with the media on Monday, Rattler revealed how he has matured over the past year. He laid out a couple of areas where things are different now that he is wearing a South Carolina jersey but Rattler says he will still be the same person throughout spring practice.

“I just feel more mature on the field with my preparation, how I’m going about things I want to improve in my game,” Rattler said. “All different types of areas but I’m still the same me, still got the same mindset. Confident, ready to attack and that’s been my mindset the first three or four practices and going to be my mindset going forward.”

Head coach Shane Beamer struggled to find a starting quarterback throughout last season, with three different players getting significant playing time. Now, Rattler comes into the program and gives the Gamecocks stability at the position, even with the struggles in Norman during 2021.

Rattler has completed 70.1% of his throws throughout his career, passing for 4,595 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Being the full-time starter for Oklahoma during the 2020 season, he eclipsed 3,000 yards and threw four touchdowns for every interception. South Carolina now has one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC East, eager and determined for a new challenge.

Spencer Rattler reveals why South Carolina was the right fit

Back in early March, Rattler explained why South Carolina was the right fit for him after entering the transfer portal in the offseason. He said knowing Beamer has helped make the transition easier and how comfortable he was with the Gamecocks.

“I feel totally refreshed. Being at a new university, a great university like this. I am very comfortable here. Knowing coach Beamer, getting to know all these guys my first month up here,” Rattler said. “I made a great decision. I feel like the pressure is taken off a little bit. My main focus right now is starting over with my team after spring break and going on to spring ball.”

South Carolina will kick off the season on Sept. 3 against Georgia State in Columbia. If Rattler is named the starter, it will be his first game action since facing Iowa State in November.
