South Carolina is reportedly targeting Paul Mainieri as its next baseball coach, according to Teddy Cahill.

Mainieri last coached at LSU until 2021 and has been out of the coaching game over the last three years. A former College World Series champion as Tigers’ head coach back in 2009, Mainieri could be brought in to resurrect South Carolina’s program.

Overall, he is 1,505-775-8 in his carer with LSU, Notre Dame, Air Force and St. Thomas baseball.

Mainieri initially retired after the 2021 season. He led LSU to the NCAA Super Regionals but had not made a College World Series since 2017, where the Tigers were the runner-up.

While with LSU, Mainieri won four SEC titles and six SEC Tournament titles. He also led Notre Dame to the College World Series in 2002 amid nine total NCAA Tournament appearances.

Mainieri won the NCBWA National Coach of the Year award in 2015, the Skip Bertman Award that same year and was also the coach of the year in 2009 while winning a national title.

With Mainieri as the target, South Carolina seemingly has its sights on the SEC legend to replace Mark Kingston.

South Carolina finished with a 37-25 (13-17) record in 2024 and was swept in its final two series of the regular season.

Kingston finished his time at South Carolina with a 217-155 record. Kingston addressed his future in Columbia after the Gamecocks lost to James Madison in an elimination game on Sunday.

“Everybody at South Carolina wants to win at a high level,” Kingston said when asked if he felt like he had the support of the administration.

Kingston added that his program obviously needed to get better. The Gamecocks missed the NCAA Tournament twice in two seasons under Kingston.

“I think every program in the country wants to keep getting better and we’re no different. The SEC is filled with teams that are dumping huge resources in. I think it’s just a matter of we need to continue to do everything we can to try to get this program what it needs to be successful,” Kingston said. “There’s so many parts of our program that are in great shape, great shape. But obviously we need to keep getting better – bottom line.”
