Spencer Rattler becomes 7th South Carolina quarterback to throw for over 3,000 yards in a season
South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler has been on a roll in his last three games for the Gamecocks. For his team to play at their best, everybody knew Rattler was going to need to step up and he’s done just that down the stretch for South Carolina.
He was dialed in during the Gator Bowl against Notre Dame, and after connecting with Xavier Legette on an amazing 42-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter, he stamped his mark in Gamecock football history. Rattler has now thrown for over 3,000 passing yards this season, becoming just the seventh quarterback in South Carolina football history to do so, according to the ESPN broadcast.
During the final two games of South Carolina’s regular season, Rattler put on a spectacular display throwing for 438 yards and six touchdowns against the Tennessee Volunteers and then 360 yards and two touchdowns against Clemson.
Friday night’s game was a wild and wacky game in what was one of the most entertaining matchups of the 2022-2023 college football season. Notre Dame won 45-38 in an absolute classic. Rattler finished with 246 passing yards, while tossing in two touchdowns and one interception in the Gator Bowl.

South Carolina was in firm control of the game in the first half and held a commanding 24-10 advantage, but they struggled to get anything going on the offensive side of the ball late in the game. Notre Dame outscored South Carolina 28-14 in the second half, including the game-winning 16-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Buchner to tight end Mitchell Evans with 1:38 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Spencer Rattler fired an absolute strike to Xavier Legette
This one will sting for South Carolina for quite some time, especially since they had control of the game early. Gamecocks’ receiver Xavier Legette had one of the most spectacular catches of the game, a 42-yard touchdown strike from Spencer Rattler in the third quarter. It was one of the most impressive passes of the season from Rattler. Even though the end result of Friday night’s game will be tough to stomach for South Carolina, there were still plenty of positives to appreciate from their final three games of their 2022 campaign.
