Spencer Rattler noticed a difference between his first and second year at South Carolina. The Gamecocks quarterback might be more polished going into 2023.

As a vocal leader on the team, Rattler described the closeness of his squad under head coach Shane Beamer. With a new offense, Rattler and the rest of the team seem to be on the same page during the learning process.

As they say, perhaps Rattler feels the same way, practice makes perfect.

“Being a year into it, I feel like we’re very close as a team,” Rattler said of going into Year 2 with South Carolina. “That’s something coach (Shane) Beamer always says is we want to be the closest and most connected team in the country. And you know, all the transfers have been here a year, new guys are coming in, we’re bringing them along, but you know, we’re all gelling more each and every day.

“Practice has been great. A lot more comfortable with everything now. I love the new offense with Coach Dowell (Loggains) and just been enjoying it.”

Rattler also opened up on his mentality as a quarterback, being one of the veterans on the team.

“Yeah, I mean, in terms of mentality, same mentality of the work, putting in the same amount of work,” Rattler said. “Definitely more comfortable, more loose. You know, I think towards the end of the season, we as a team, we all played more loose and that’s when we played better and we’re just trying to do that in our spring ball, fall camp and going into the season.”

Not only that, Rattler stepped up as a more vocal leader throughout the early goings of spring practice.

“Yeah, it’s just like you said, being a newer guy last year, I just wanted to show my leadership through my work ethic,” Rattler said. “Wasn’t as vocal, was a little bit vocal, but definitely more vocal this year. Just trying to help the guys with a new offense.

“You know us as quarterbacks, we have a little jumpstart on it. We started early on it so we have a good understanding of what the guys are picking up really well. Everybody’s responding well in practice and we’ve been competing and having a great day, really every day, so it’s been great.”

Last season, Rattler threw for 3,026 yards, 18 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 66.2% completion percentage.
