A huge part of an upset win over Texas A&M for South Carolina on Saturday was the hot start to the game the Gamecocks had. A kick return for a touchdown, a first drive interception and second drive fumble all resulted in points for the Gamecocks and had them up 17-0 quickly in the game. Following the win, quarterback Spencer Rattler recalled what that quick start to the game did for the Gamecocks.

“It was 17-0 in the blink of an eye,” Rattler said. “For us, it was like, we got in the red zone so quick we were like, ‘alright, what’s our rhythm here? What are we gonna call?’ We were kinda thrown off-guard. I thought we called some plays that they guarded really well, especially those first three plays we were in the red zone. It was weird because we didn’t get in a rhythm until three drives, so once we got going, I felt like we did a lot of great things.

“In the first half, we kept shooting ourselves in the foot. Like, we got a first down and then we got a penalty. We had some balls that should’ve went our way. Just things like that. But we’ll be alright. I thought it was pretty solid.”

Things started with Xavier Legette housing the opening kick 100 yards for a touchdown. Once Texas A&M got the ball back, it took just five plays before throwing an interception back to the Gamecocks. Four plays later, South Carolina would kick a field goal. Things continued to get worse from there for the Aggies and better for Rattler and his team.

A three-play drive resulted in a fumble for Texas A&M. The Gamecocks and Rattler then needed just four plays and 19 yards to score a touchdown and go up 17-0. Things got close later in the game but South Carolina never game up its lead.

Gamecocks keep improving each day

The upset win kept things rolling in the right direction for South Carolina under Shane Beamer in his second season. After playing two ranked opponents and starting 1-2, South Carolina has rattled off four straight wins. The Gamecocks are 5-2 overall, 2-2 in the SEC and have cracked the top 25 polls.
