This is an important offseason for Spencer Rattler and the South Carolina offense.

The senior quarterback returned to Columbia to try to do something special in his final season with the Gamecocks and also in hopes of improving his draft stock.

In order for those things to take place this fall, Rattler and his playmakers must get comfortable with new offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains‘ system.

Mastering the offense is at the top of the to-do list for Rattler over the next few months.

“Just excited to get back and get back to work,” Rattler said after the spring game. “I know we’ll have a little break here in the summer, but we’ll all still be working. Really adding these young guys in, these recruits in, and seeing what they can do. Then obviously continue to gel as a group and perfect this offense, because this spring – new offense for us. But I feel like we’ve all got it down pretty well. But we’re still learning.”

Rattler returns his leading receiver from last year in Antwane Wells Jr. Wells caught 68 passes for 928 yards and six touchdowns a season ago. Running back JuJu McDowell and receiver Ahmarean Brown are also back after finishing fourth and fifth on the team in receptions last year. Both players caught more than 20 passes a season ago.

USC is also bringing in some talented playmakers in the 2023 recruiting class, including five-star prospect Nyckoles Harbor, who will arrive this summer.

Rattler and the rest of the Gamecocks offense got off to a solid start learning the new offense this spring. They will look to build on that this summer.

“It was just install and still learning,” Rattler said of the spring. “In the summer we’ve got to perfect it. That is our goal this summer and we’ll get it done.”

Spencer Rattler discusses ‘smooth’ spring for Gamecocks

Entering his second season at South Carolina, Rattler sees the team chemistry rising after a strong finish to 2022.

The quarterback praised play on both sides of the ball after the spring game and noted how the team is “gelling” heading into next season. They’ll hope to carry that into the summer and fall as they look to take another leap forward following back-to-back winning seasons.

“I feel like we didn’t really have one bad day in the spring time,” Rattler said. “Coach (Shane) Beamer said it in the locker room. We didn’t have one bad day on either side of the ball. We’re gelling. We’re a close team. We’ve still got a ways to go, but we love this group. We love this offense. We love this defense. Special teams. Everything. It’s been a great spring.”
