Spencer Rattler talks South Carolina wide receivers that have impressed him
Spring practice is underway in Columbia, South Carolina, which means Oklahoma transfer and former five-star quarterback Spencer Rattler has been introduced to his Gamecock teammates and vice versa. Rattled revealed his first impressions on his wide receiving core after day three.
“Josh Vann, he’s made a lot of big plays for us. Me and him got a great connection,” Rattler said. “Jaheim (Bell), he’s doing a great job, too. He pulled his hamstring, but he looked good that first day. A lot of guys stepping up. EJ [Jenkins] is looking really good. [Ahmarean Brown] — got to get the chemistry down with him. We’re just working with everybody. [Antwane Wells] looks great, you know, so everybody looks good.”
Wells played last season for James Madison before transferring to South Carolina early to participate in spring training. He had an outstanding 83 receptions for 1,250 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, bringing his two-season career total to 1,853 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Vann led the Gamecocks’ receiving core last season, catching 43 passes for 679 yards for five touchdowns. The other four Rattler mentioned (Legette, Jenkins, Brown, Wells) combined for 27 receptions for 284 yards and two touchdowns for the Gamecock last season.

With Luke Doty, Jason Brown and Zeb Noland inconsistently splitting time under center throughout the season, Rattler will bring stability in terms of chemistry with the South Carolina receiving core. Brown and Noland are gone to graduation, while Sophomore quarterback Colten Gauthier will now be fighting Doty and incoming freshman Braden Davis for the the number two spot.
“No, I mean, Spencer is taking all the reps with the ones,” South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer said. “I mean, you guys (the media) are out there. We talk about competition all the time so right now, he’s talking all of those reps with the first group and it kind of is what it is. Luke [Doty] is getting more and more clear to do everything and the more and more he can do, the better. Colten [Gauthier] is doing a great job, Braden (Davis), all those guys and we’re certainly on track and on pace to be able to be where we need to be.”
Throughout his career, Rattler has thrown for 4,595 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, beginning in Norman with the Sooners. To add on, the quarterback has consistently been accurate, completing 70.1% of his throws. Beamer knows the instant upgrade Rattler brings to the program and was blunt enough to the media to show he’s their QB1.
