Shortly after GG Jackson‘s huge commitment to South Carolina basketball, Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler welcomed him on Twitter. The pair of incoming stars to South Carolina athletics first met during an official visit by Jackson to the campus, where Rattler became a major part of recruiting efforts by the school.

Jackson is the No. 1 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class, according to the On3 Consensus Rankings, and announced his commitment to South Carolina on Saturday. Jackson was originally committed to North Carolina before decommitting nine days ago.

As the highest-ranked recruit of the 2023 class, Jackson becomes the Gamecocks’ highest-ranked recruit in school history. On top of welcoming him to the program now, it appeared that Rattler, another former No. 1 recruit in the nation, was a big part of helping sell Jackson on the decision.

“I told him, ‘You’re from here, you might as well come here and stay home. Everybody loves you here, you’re a great player, and you’ll make the basketball team better,’” shared Rattler after meeting Jackson for the first time.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound power forward originally committed to North Carolina on April 27, when he chose Hubert Davis and Co. over DukeAuburnGeorgetown, the G-League, and South Carolina

His newest commitment is not the first time Jackson pledged to come to South Carolina as part of the 2022 class. Before Jackson eventually announced for UNC, he told South Carolina’s staff and administration he would be coming to play for the Gamecocks. That was until their men’s head basketball coach, Frank Martin, was fired.

Now, Jackson will join coach Lamont Paris and a Gamecocks program on the rise as a major win for Paris’ recruiting efforts. Adding to the hype surrounding his commitment, On3’s Jamie Shaw explained that Jackson intends to reclassify to the 2022 recruiting class — allowing him to join South Carolina this season and make an immediate impact.
