In the most recent depth chart put out by the South Carolina Gamecocks and head coach Shane Beamer, wide receiver Tyshawn Russell wasn’t listed at all, raising questions about his availability.

Despite that, as Beamer explained on the weekly SEC teleconference, Russell is available this week and there isn’t an issue that he’s dealing with.

“Still on the team, working hard,” Beamer said, succinctly.

While it’s good for South Carolina fans to hear that Russell isn’t having an injury issue that’s keeping him out and that he’s still on the team, Beamer didn’t share more information than that about the situation. Because of that, it’s unclear why he’s not listed on the depth chart this week.

Tyshawn Russell came to South Carolina as a three-star recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Russell was the 49th-ranked athlete in that recruiting cycle. He played his high school football at Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Interestingly, he didn’t begin playing wide receiver until his senior season in high school. Prior to that, he had been a defensive back. He then put up massive numbers as a senior, with 61 catches for 1,334 yards and 22 touchdowns.

In 2023, Russell played in 10 games and had five receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown. However, to this point in the 2024 season, he’s not recorded a stat on the offensive side of the ball.

This comes as South Carolina is preparing for one of its toughest games of the season against Ole Miss. In it, the Gamecocks will likely need to score consistently throughout the game. So, Shane Beamer and the rest of the Gamecocks are going to want everyone possible to be available on the offensive side of the ball.

Shane Beamer addresses facing Juice Wells as Ole Miss player

Star wide receiver Juice Wells transferred from South Carolina to Ole Miss. Now, Shane Beamer knows handling emotions is going to be a key to playing him in their upcoming game.

“I think that’s every game. You want to make sure you play with great poise. They’ve got a good football team and I know we’re gonna get the best version of Ole Miss. What we’re focusing on is that they get the best version of South Carolina. They’ve got a lot of really good players on offense,” Beamer said.

“Juice is a good player, but when you sit there and watch [Tre Harris], they threw him the ball 15 times Saturday. So we better be not caught up in one player. We better be aware of him. Then we better know what a weapon the tight end is. The slot receiver, Cayden Lee, we recruited the heck out of him and he had a lot of targets on Saturday. The running back had a lot of targets in the passing game. So for us, it’ll just be they have a lot of really good players that we have to prepare for.”
