Arizona State transfer guard Joson Sanon commits to St. John's

Former Arizona State Sun Devils shooting guard Joson Sanon has found a new home after entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. He’s committed to join Rick Pitino and the St. John’s Red Storm, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
The 6’5 scorer signed with Arizona State as part of its vaunted 2024 recruiting class, choosing Bobby Hurley and Co. over Indiana, Arizona, Providence and others after he reclassified up a year from 2025. In his lone season in Tempe, Sanon was one of the team’s few bright spots, averaging 11.9 points and 3.4 rebounds while playing just over 28 minutes per game.
He, along with former five-star forward Jayden Quaintance, looked to be the program’s building blocks of the future. But after another sub-.500 season under Hurley, Sanon is on the move.
“Coach Pitino believes in me and my potential and what he can do for me,” Sanon told ESPN, regarding his decision. “He preaches working hard, and I want to show him I’m the hardest working player that’s ever played for him. The way Coach P teaches defense is something I want to invest my time into.”

A native of Fall River (Mass.), he ranked as the No. 24 prospect nationally in the Class of 2024, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was originally committed to rival Arizona before flipping to ASU in May, and also held offers from Kansas, UConn, Kentucky and dozens of others.
Time will tell if Joson Sanon can help St. John’s remain atop the Big East next season. He’s an interesting player for sure, and Rick Pitino is already making moves after being booted from the NCAA Tournament in the Round of 32.
