Stephen F. Austin is honing in on its next head coach for the men’s basketball program. The Lumberjacks are expected to hire Texas Tech assistant Matt Braeuer, according to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68.

“Stephen F. Austin is expected to hire Texas Tech assistant Matt Braeuer, source told @TheFieldOf68,” Goodman posted on X. “Braeuer has been with the Red Raiders the last two years with Grant McCasland and with McCasland at North Texas as well.”

As Goodman alluded to, Braeuer has been with the Red Raiders for the past two seasons. Prior, he coached at North Texas, under Grant McCasland, as well. He’s been a key part of the success McCasland’s teams have enjoyed over the past couple of seasons.

The Red Raiders coach has showered him with praise over the their time together: “He is a relentless recruiter with a brilliant basketball mind,” McCasland said of Braeuer, via Texas Tech’s website. “He had success as a player and had coached at the highest levels. He also has a great feel for what winning looks like.”

As a player, Braeuer was a key contributor for Wichita State. He ranks in the top 15 all-time in career three-pointers made (130) and career assists (308) for the Shockers. Additionally, Braeuer helped Wichita State advance to the Sweet Sixteen and earn a top-10 national ranking during his tenure.

Now, he’ll have a shot to lead Stephen F. Austin as its head coach. The Lumberjacks relieved former leader Kyle Keller of his duties in January after a disappointing 1-7 start to Southland Conference play and an 8-11 overall record for the season at the time.

Since, associate head coach Tony Jasick had served as the team’s interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Now, it’ll be Braeuer’s team, as he receives his biggest opportunity of his young coaching career with the Lumberjacks.

Moving forward, Stephen F. Austin will hope Matt Braeuer can return them to a NCAA Tournament darling, after they enjoyed a bit of success in March over the past decade and change. If he’s able to do so, he’ll continue rising up the ranks, and become one of the more sought-after coaches in all of the nation.
