Maliq Brown, a 6-foot-9 power forward out of Culpeper (Va.) Blue Ridge School has committed to Syracuse basketball for the class of 2022, he tells On3.

Brown is the Orange’s fourth commitment of the class. He joins Justin Taylor, Quadir Copeland, and Peter Carey. Syracuse is also targeting Chris Bunch.

Maliq Brown on why he chose Syracuse

“As soon as I got on my visit, I knew in my gut that it was the place I needed to be,” Brown said. “Coach (Jim) Boeheim is a legend. All the coaches built a good relationship with me and I got along well with the players on the team. The recruits that’s coming in with my class… Justin Taylor, Quadir, Peter… I’ve already been talking to them.”

What does Brown expect his role to be as a freshman?

“They don’t have a lot of players coming back next year. That’s another thing I was looking into. I just want to go in and play my game and work on my craft. As I continue to work on my game and improve, they see me playing the stretch four.”

How does Brown describe his game?

“My stronger side is a defensive player,” Brown said. “Especially with the two-three zone, I think I’ll mesh with that really easily. Offensive-wise, I see how they use their four men and everyone is involved with the offense. I knew I would fit in with that, and how they play and in their system. It’s going to be a little different to have the ball in my hands more, with ball screens and pick and pops but I think I’ll be able to manage with that well.”

What’s Brown most excited about?

“Just knowing that I have a future home where I’m able to be myself and enjoy everything that I can…especially being up in Syracuse. There’s nothing really up there besides Syracuse and the school and stuff. The fan base is crazy. The fans all knew who I was before I even got there. It was unbelievable.”
