Notre Dame transfer QB Steve Angeli commits to Syracuse

Former Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli has committed to Syracuse via the NCAA Transfer Portal per On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He was the No. 30 QB in On3’s 2025 Transfer Portal Player Rankings. Angeli spent three seasons with the Fighting Irish.
He was starting quarterback Riley Leonard‘s backup last season but played significant minutes in Notre Dame’s 27-24 win over Penn State in the College Football Playoff semifinals. In the win, Angeli completed 6-of-7 passes for 44 yards.
In total, Angeli made 11 appearances for the Fighting Irish in the 2024 campaign. He completed 24-of-36 pass attempts for 268 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception. In 2023, Angeli completed 77.3% of his passes for a career-high 504 yards and seven touchdowns compared to just one interception.
Angeli only made two appearances during his freshman season. The 6-foot-3 QB was expected to be one of the frontrunners for Notre Dame’s starting spot behind center in the upcoming season.
Angeli was competing against CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey for the coveted QB1 title. Earlier this month, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman revealed how his quarterbacks had been handling the internal competition.
“They focus on the reps they get. They do the best job they can,” Freeman said. “If they’re not in there, they’re getting mental reps. They’re helping each other out and are really focused on being the best version of them and that’s all you can ask.

“If you’re worried about anything else then you’re not really helping yourself at all, right. If you’re worried about counting the other person’s reps and how many completions he has, that’s not helping you be the best version of you. So, they’ve been amazing.”
Steve Angeli played high school football at Bergen Catholic (NJ), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 565 overall player and No. 33 QB in the 2022 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
This isn’t the first time Syracuse has looked to the portal for its next quarterback. Last offseason, the Orange reeled in Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord, who led the nation in passing yards. Now, Steve Angeli will look to be Syracuse’s next success story.
Next season will be Syracuse’s second under head coach Fran Brown. He led the program to a 10-3 record in his debut campaign at the helm last season.
