Syracuse guard Chance Westry was cleared for full basketball-related activities, per On3’s Joe Tipton. He missed the entire 2023 season with a “lower body injury” in the preseason.

Starting his career at Auburn, Westry transferred to Syracuse in April of 2023. Now after his injury, he’s back in action for the Orange.

As a member of the Class of 2022, Westry was a four-star recruit out of Harrisburg (Pa.) and Compass Prep (Ari.), according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 3 overall prospect in Arizona, the No. 7 combo guard in the class and the No. 37 overall prospect in the class.

While at Auburn as a freshman, he was slowed by a preseason leg injury which required surgery. He played in 11 games and averaged 2.5 points per game while logging just under 10 minutes a game.

While he hasn’t suited up for Syracuse yet, this is good news. Head coach Adrian Autry was unsure of Westry would return last season, and while he didn’t play, he could finally make his debut this winter.

“We don’t have anything definitive… he’s taking it and trying to work it so we don’t really know what the timeline is,” Autry said in a press conference after the Orange’s 81-73 win over Pittsburgh. “But you know, the one thing is when you’re in these situations, I always err on the side of caution because, you know, he has eligibility left and I don’t want him to rush back and something happens. So, take your time and we’ll see what it is.”

As far as how Westry contributes, that’s to-be-determined.

“Syracuse was one of the first schools to ever recruit me and it was a perfect fit at this point in my college career,” Westry said to pennlive.com in the Fall. “I work on all aspects of my game but me and my trainer have been putting in extra work on shooting in all different scenarios. Off the dribble, spot up, catch and shoot opportunities.”
