Report: TCU makes decision on Deion Sanders head coach candidacy
TCU was the second Big 12 head coaching job to open this season after firing Gary Patterson after over two decades. After Texas Tech filled their vacancy with Joey McGuire, the Horned Frogs are still searching.
Multiple names have been linked with the job, including Deion Sanders. However, it seems as if he is no longer in the running.
According to a report from Drew Davison of the Fort Worth-Star Telegram, TCU has “has shifted to candidates” other than Sanders. The current Jackson State head coach did interview with the Horned Frogs but they are looking for somebody with more coaching experience.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported earlier this week that Sanders is “squarely in the mix” for the Big 12 opening after impressing the Horned Frogs’ brass in his first interview for the gig.
Zach Evans, TCU’s star running back, was someone who was advocating for Sanders to get the job in Fort Worth. He sent out a simple tweet on Friday, saying “We want @DeionSanders.”
Sanders has been the head coach of Jackson State for two seasons now, sporting a 13-4 record. Nine of those wins have come this year, with the only loss of the 2021 season coming to FBS opponent Louisiana-Monroe.
Update on Deion Sanders’ health
Sanders has not coached in a couple of Jackson State’s games this season due to surgery complications from a broken foot. He provided an update on his health on Wednesday over Twitter.

“Tiger Nation!! Your non stop love and support through these past weeks have been a TREMENDOUS BLESSING and I cannot thank you enough. As you know there have been some complications following my foot surgery, but it brings me such joy to tell you that I’m now out of the hospital and on my path that we started TOGETHER. The path that we challenged one another to be SMART, TOUGH, FAST, and DISCIPLINED which involves me as well. I promise you I’m going to be smart and continue to adhere to my wonderful team of doctors orders.
“I want you to continue to be tough on us and challenge us to get to the level of excellence that we’re capable of. Oftentimes fast is looked upon as having speed, but fast in this instance is being fleet of thought. Must be thoughtful and thankful as well as disciplined to ACHIEVE and BELIEVE our goals that we have established together. Oh and don’t be surprised when you see me back on the field in a new whip. #CoachPrime “IT DON’T STOP” #IBELIEVE
Other names linked to TCU job
Sanders is not the only named connected with the TCU head coaching job, as Tony Elliot, Kellen Moore, and Jay Norvell were seen as possible candidates as well.
Moore has already shut down the rumors of his heading to Fort Worth, saying he is happy being the offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys. He is not talking to any college programs about other positions as well.
“No, not one bit,” Moore said. “that’s Dave Dunn’s (Moore’s agent) job. He does a great job with it. I don’t worry about any of that stuff.”
