TCU finds itself in an unusual position. The College Football Playoff committee ranked them No. 4 on Tuesday night after a fantastic 9-0 start under Sonny Dykes. It must be tough for a program such as the Horned Frogs to not get excited about being in the CFP discussion, even when taking everything a week at a time.

When asked if rankings are something they discuss, Dykes said it’s never been talked about once inside the Fort Worth buildings. Even when TCU cracked the top 25 for the first time earlier in the year, Dykes has not discussed the success with his players or coaching staff.

“You know what’s funny? We’ve never talked about it once, honestly. We’ve never talked about the rankings, we never talked about it when we got in the top 25 for the first time. We haven’t talked about conference standings one time. Really don’t talk about it as a coaching staff.”

While Dykes may not want to have the discussion, TCU has continually been on the rise this season. Picked in the bottom half of the Big 12, they now find themselves as the only remaining undefeated team and in a good spot to end up at AT&T Stadium. Now ranked inside the top four of the CFP rankings, Dykes’ team is now one of the more talked about in the country.

Sonny Dykes, TCU looking to take things day by day

As any college football coach would tell you, Dykes says TCU is taking things “one day at a time.” The biggest matchup of the season is ahead, with a top-20 showdown against Texas scheduled for primetime on ESPN.

College GameDay may be in town and focused on the Horned Frogs but all focus is on Saturday night in Austin.

“I think our guys have a one-day-at-a-time approach and it’s served us well at this point,” said Dykes. “Our guys just want to go out, have a good practice tomorrow and do everything we can to play our best game on Saturday and go out and play against a very, very good Texas team on the road, in front of a good crowd. College GameDay and all of the things that go along with that.

“But it’s not something that we discuss really because we know we have a job to do. It’s been a challenge to get here but it’s going to be even more of a challenge to stay here. We have to focus on what we can control and that’s our preparation and our performance on Saturday night.”
