A lot went wrong for TCU during their national title loss to Georgia on Monday.

If the final score is 65-7, how could it not? Speaking with the media afterwards, quarterback Max Duggan and safety Dee Winters broke down the demoralizing loss, wondering what they could’ve done differently against the Bulldogs.

“Defensive applause, they didn’t really do anything special. We kind of just bit ourselves up. They kind of just executed on our misalignments and kind of just kept scoring on those, things like that. We just kept beating ourselves up,” explained Winters. “Overthinking. Running too fast to the ball. Things of that nature.”

Duggan echoed his teammate’s sentiment, adding why he believed the score was so lopsided in the end.

“They’re a great team. Everybody knows how good they’ve been this year and in prior years. We knew that. I think tonight was one of those nights where, at least offensively, we couldn’t get anything rolling,” stated Duggan. “They were playing well on defense. We were shooting ourselves in the foot. I was making bad decisions. Wasn’t executing well. Not putting us in a position to score some points and move the ball. They’re a great team. Obviously that’s not what we thought was going to happen or wanted to happen or what we worked for.

“It was just one of those nights where we couldn’t really do much on our end.”

Duggan played far from the Heisman caliber he provided throughout the 2022 season, passing for 152 yards and two interceptions, while also taking five sacks. As for Winters, he amassed just seven total tackles on the night.

While both made sure to credit Georgia for their ferocity and talent, it’s evident the TCU stars believe they inflicted more damage on themselves than anything. That’ll be tough to live with this offseason, especially knowing how rare chances for national titles are.
