This season has represented a remarkable turnaround for TCU in just its first season under head coach Sonny Dykes. Within that turnaround has been remarkable coolness in critical moments, like the fire-drill field goal against Baylor and the entirety of the Fiesta Bowl.

During an appearance on SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt, Sonny Dykes explained how the Horned Frogs have become such a good team in difficult moments this season.

“It comes from a lot of leadership from our squad, a lot of preparation,” Sonny Dykes explained. “You know, we had a great week of practice.”

The most important thing for TCU has been to be as prepared as possible this season. That means taking care of business in practice and having everyone know their roles on gameday.

“You know, we came early, came on the 24th. Enjoyed the Fiesta Bowl and they took great care of us. VRBO and the Fiesta Bowl committee did an incredible job. We had a super week. We came a couple days early, we spent Christmas Day together, we rested up a little bit, and then we hit it and had two really good practices, and then a couple of walk-throughs to get ourselves ready.”

In particular, Sonny Dykes wanted to see his team ready to play physically. In the Fiesta Bowl, they were able to do that and more.

“Thought our team was fast and we played physical today. You know what was gonna be the big thing for us was matching Michigan’s physicality and I thought we were the most physical football team today, without a doubt.”

With the win over Michigan, TCU advanced to the championship game against Georgia.

Sonny Dykes on watching the Peach Bowl

After the game, TCU was riding an emotional high. At the same time, the Horned Frogs needed to know who their next opponent was going to be. Sonny Dykes explained what it was actually like watching the Peach Bowl.

“It was a heck of a football game. Obviously two very good teams. A lot of back and forth. Really good football game. Reminded me a lot of our game tonight, as well,” Dykes said.

“Trying to just relax tonight. You don’t want to get too worked up. One way or the other, you’re going to play a good football team no matter what. Try to watch and see what happens. Go tomorrow, we’ll start getting ready.”
