TCU lands transfer guard Tanner Toolson from Utah Valley

Utah Valley’s Tanner Toolson was among the best remaining two-guards left in the portal. He’s now off the board with his reported signing on Sunday.
Toolson has signed with TCU from the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. That makes him the third addition in this portal cycle so far for the Horned Frogs.
Toolson has spent the past two seasons with Utah Valley after starting his career at BYU. He has averaged 10.8 points (41.2% FG, 32.5% 3PT), 3.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game in that collegiate career with the Wolverines and Cougars. That includes a career-best season this past year as a redshirt sophomore in posting 13.3 points (45.3% FG, 34.9% 3PT on 1.9 makes), 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals for Toolson. He was top-five in all of those statistics for Utah Valley as their second-leading scorer and in steals while leading them in field goals and three-pointers made.
With that, Utah Valley would go 25-9 overall as the regular season champions at 15-1 in the WAC. Toolson would be one of their three players who would earn an all-league honor as he made the All-WAC Second Team. The Wolverines wouldn’t win the WAC Tournament, though, which kept them out of the NCAA Tournament and led to them finishing with a first-round loss to San Francisco in the NIT.
Over this offseason, Utah Valley has lost three of its leading contributors to the portal. Toolson is the second to commit with Carter Willing transferring to Clemson while Dominick Nelson is also available still.

Toolson was the highest-rated of those departures as one of the best remaining shooting guards left in the portal per the latest update to On3’s Industry Ranking of 2025’s Top Transfer Portal Players. He is the No. 215 overall transfer as the No. 52 SG but was previously the No. 21 SG still available in those ratings.
Now, Toolson is one of three commitments during this cycle to the Horned Frogs. They’ve also added a pair of point guards in Jayden Pierre (Providence) and Brock Harding (Iowa). That’s after losing four transfers of their own with Frankie Collins (Vanderbilt) and Ernest Udeh Jr. (Miami) along with Isaiah Manning and Vasean Allette.
