Dan Mullen takes shot at Tennessee's resume on Twitter
Tennessee managed to remain ranked in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, checking in at No. 21. But at least some are questioning why the Volunteers are ranked there with four losses, including ESPN analyst Dan Mullen.
Mullen took a bit of a shot at the Volunteers on Tuesday night on Twitter as a result.
Responding to a tweet that noted College Football Playoff selection committee chairman Boo Corrigan said that Tennessee was a “really good team earlier in the year,” Mullen opened fire.
“Must be talking about that 17 point win over Austin Peay,” he wrote on Twitter.
Of course, that’s not the only win Tennessee has this year. The Volunteers also blew out Virginia, knocked off South Carolina by 21, beat Texas A&M and upended Kentucky.
Sure, none of those are playoff-caliber opponents, but there are some decent wins in there. Enough to keep Tennessee ranked in the top 25?
That’s up for debate to some.
Greg McElroy questions Tennessee’s small fall
One thing that stuck out to ESPN analyst Greg McElroy in the rankings reveal on Tuesday night was the seemingly inconsistent treatment of Oregon State and Tennessee coming off losses.

While Oregon State lost to Washington by two points over the weekend, Tennessee was steamrolled by Georgia 38-10.
Yet Oregon State fell five spots in the rankings and Tennessee fell just three.
“I’m trying to figure out the justification for dropping Oregon State five spots,” McElroy said. “I look at all these teams that have slid up, Oregon State is sitting through 11 games at 8-3 with some pretty decent wins at their disposal. Yet they free fall, whereas a team like Tennessee gets absolutely boat raced in two consecutive weeks and they drop three spots.”
While there are likely various arguments that could be made in defense of those two moves, the fact of the matter remains that many are questioning Tennessee’s placement in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.
