WATCH: Drew Gilbert and Frank Anderson ejected from Tennessee vs. Notre Dame game
Tennessee slugger Drew Gilbert was ejected from Friday’s Super Regional matchup in the 2022 NCAA Tournament between Notre Dame and the Volunteers. Trailing 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Gilbert did not like a call from the home plate umpire when he called a strike. He was furious and let the umpire know about it with some choice words.
Once Gilbert was ejected, that sparked the Tennessee dugout to get fired up and pitching coach Frank Anderson was tossed after arguing with the umpire. Following the ejections, Volunteers head man Tony Vitello decided to talk with the home plate umpire.
After being ejected, Gilbert will not be available for Game 2 of the series, as well, as he’ll have to serve a one-game suspension, per NCAA rule. Obviously, his loss is a massive one as he’s one of the best players on their team and one of the best players in college baseball. Tennessee pitching coach Frank Anderson will also be suspended for tomorrow’s game, per the NCAA rule. Anderson could also face up to a three-game suspension due to previous incidents. He was also ejected in the first inning of the Tennessee-Alabama game earlier this season.

This season, Gilbert boasts a batting average .373, he’s hit 21 doubles, and he’s also drilled 11 home runs, while bringing in 70 RBIs. He was recently named the 2022 SEC Tournament MVP and was also named to the SEC All-Defensive team this year, too. He celebrated the SEC Tournament crown with a bat flip. Gilbert was named to the 2022 Knoxville Regional All-Tournament team in this year’s NCAA Tournament.
It should be noted that a No. 1 national seed has never come back from a seven-run deficit since national seeds started being selected in 1999. The previous record for a comeback is six runs–that’s happened twice.
