Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson headed back to the locker room early before halftime after suffering an apparent ankle injury vs. Mississippi State. Sampson went down after his left leg appeared to bend in an awkward position after a hit late in the second quarter.

The Volunteers star remained on the ground for several moments and grabbed at his leg while trainers tended to him. He eventually got off and was able to walk to the sideline under his own powers. However, cameras captures him leaving early to the locker room shortly after with 46 seconds remaining until halftime.

Fortunately, Sampson would make his return to the game to begin the third quarter. He finished the game with 149 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries, so it’s safe to say he is just fine after the injury scare.

Although Sampson came back in the second half, however, quarterback Nico Iamaleava as held out due to an upper body injury. Gaston Moore closed out the 33-14 win in his place as Tennessee improved to 8-1 (5-1 SEC) on the year.

Tennessee has a pivotal matchup next week against Georgia as it looks to continue to build its College Football Playoff resume. Kickoff for that game is set for 7:30 p.m. ET next Saturday in Athens.

Nico Iamaleava injury update: Josh Heupel reveals positive news on Tennessee QB

Fans were holding their breath for an update on Iamaleava postgame and coach Josh Heupel offered one. Fortunately, he had good news.

“We anticipate having him next week,” Heupel said.

The coach added that keeping Iamaleava out of the second half was simply a precautionary measure. The team was still able to get the job done without him and will hope he rests up and gets as healthy as possible before the matchup with Georgia.

Tennessee is one of three one-loss teams remaining in the SEC along with Texas and Texas A&M. If Iamaleava stays healthy, the Vols should have every opportunity to compete for a conference title.
