Former Tennessee receiver Andison Coby will transfer to Western Michigan, he announced Monday via Twitter. He entered the transfer portal on Jan. 12.

Coby played his only season with the Volunteers in 2021, finishing with just one five-yard catch against Tennessee Tech. Prior to his arrival in Knoxville, he played for Northeast Mississippi Junior College, recording 24 catches for 422 yards and seven touchdowns in 2020. Because of his limited playing time this past season, he should have at least three years of eligibility remaining.

Tennessee receiver Velus Jones Jr. was one of many to congratulate Coby for his decision on Twitter.

The Volunteers also saw receivers Isaiah Neyor and Kaeman Marley transfer this offseason. Neyor has since landed with the Texas Longhorns, while Marley is undecided. Coby is ranked as the No. 258 overall receiver according to On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings, while Marley comes in as the highest-rated at No. 21.

Coby is set to join a Western Michigan team that finished 8-5 this past season. The Broncos won their first bowl game under coach Tim Lester, delivering a 52-24 drubbing of Nevada in the Quick Lane Bowl. They are set to return quarterback Kaleb Eleby, who passed for more than 3,000 yards. So it seems Coby will enter a situation where he should see plenty of opportunity next year.

The Volunteers finished with a record of 7-6 in coach Josh Heupel’s inaugural season. They lost a close game against Purdue in the Music City Bowl, falling 48-45. With quarterback Hendon Hooker set to return, they too looked poised for a promising season in 2022.

The Tennessee transfer receiver will get his first opportunity to impress with his new school when Western Michigan opens the year against Michigan State on Sept. 2. The Volunteers open up 2022 on Sept. 3 at home against Ball State.
