This season for quarterback Hendon Hooker and his Tennessee Volunteers is shaping up to be one for the history books. And in Tennessee’s 65-24 victory over UT-Martin, the Vols signal caller added another record to his collection.

Hooker now owns the Volunteers’ record for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass, previously held by Heath Shuler. Shuler, set the mark in Tennessee’s 1993 season, where he also finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Florida State’s Charlie Ward.

During the Volunteer’s postgame press conference, Hooker addresses the new school record for consecutive games with a passing touchdown and the words shared with him by the former record holder.

“It’s a blessing. I haven’t had that chance to talk to Heath Shuler yet,” said Hooker. “I was talking to Navy, his son yesterday and he was telling me, ‘Hey you gotta grab a picture with my dad after you break his record.’ And then last week talking to Heath he was telling me, ‘Hey you’ll break that record.’ So it’s an honor to get that encouragement from him and to actually go out there and do it.”

Hooker put together another impressive performance on Saturday to continue the Heisman buzz surrounding the senior quarterback. The Greensboro, NC native only played in the first half for the Volunteers. Still, he put up 276 passing yards completing 18 of his 24 pass attempts with three touchdowns against the UT-Martin defense. To add to his new record next week, Hooker will have to face the challenge of SEC East rival No. 19 ranked Kentucky Wildcats. Kickoff for that game is scheduled at 6 p.m. CT from Neyland Stadium and can be seen on ESPN.

Tennessee AD Danny White: ‘It’s been way too long’ since Vols were in title race down stretch

No. 3 Tennessee rocked the college football world last weekend with a 52-49 upset of now-No. 6 Alabama, entering the College Football Playoff picture in a major way with the massive win in Knoxville, Tenn.

For athletics director Danny White, the win was a quick realization of the vision he had when he hired head coach Josh Heupel. The Volunteers will be playing for an SEC East division title over the next few weeks, with games against No. 19 Kentucky and No. 1 Georgia looming.

“It’s been way too long,” White told the SEC Network broadcast crew while joining them in the booth during Saturday’s game against UT-Martin. “This is obviously the kind of football we want to be playing. Late in the season you want to be playing meaningful games. Just excited about the opportunities we have ahead of us.”
