This weekend’s battle between No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Tennessee isn’t just a game between the top teams in the AP Poll. It’s also a matchup between the nation’s No. 1 offense out of Knoxville and the nation’s No. 2 defense out of Athens. Based on how special the Bulldog’s defense still is, Heupel knows how great of a test they’ll be for the Volunteer offense

Heupel shared his first thoughts on Georgia’s defense during his press conference on Monday. He says they’re talented at all three levels and the key to Tennessee finding success will be to win their solo matchups.

“They’re athletic, they can run at all three levels, they’re physical on all three levels. They don’t have any busts. (Georgia) plays their assignments extremely well. They make you earn it. It’s a great test for us,” said Heupel. “You’re gonna have to win one on ones. That’s out on the perimeter, that’s on the offensive line in the trenches. And you’ve got to be able to sustain drives.”

After their historic outing a season ago, the Bulldog defense still remains one of the best units this year. They’re allowing just 10.5 points per game. Georgia’s also held over half of their opponents to 10 or fewer points during their eight games. However, they’ll also face their toughest test of the season this weekend. The Volunteer offense is putting up a ridiculous average of 49.4 points per game. During their eight games, they have scored 40 or more in six of them.

The age-old question of offense vs. defense will come into play this weekend when Georgia hosts the Vols. Whichever unit comes out on top will put their program in the driver’s seat to get to Atlanta and, potentially, the College Football Playoff.
