Josh Heupel: Tennessee has room for improvement despite 2-0 start
After a 2-0 start, things are looking good for the Tennessee Volunteers. They took care of business against Ball State and then went on the road and beat a talented Pitt team. At the same time, there is always room for improvement. Head coach Josh Heupel knows this as well as anyone.
During a press conference, Josh Heupel was asked about how he communicates with his offense after a win. When you win, how do you explain that there is still plenty of room to improve?
“This game is never going to be perfect, either,” Josh Heupel said. “I said that after the game–say it to the players and I do all the time.”

“There’s things that we can control that we can be better, you know, and offensively the way we started, really in all three phases of the football game, the way we started…the third quarter, just offensively and special teams being more dialed in, and as coaches and players together,” Josh Heupel explained that the team was too inconsistent.

“And, I am proud of the way that we finished and competed. The second quarter has been something that we’ve placed an emphasis on just in our offseason, in training camp. It was good to see us, you know, respond and play the second quarter the way that we’re capable of, and come out on the right side of the scoreboard during that quarter.”
As Josh Heupel explained, there are more positives than negatives for Tennessee. However, those things that they can control all need to be positives throughout the season.
“So, there’s a lot of positives, but there’s things–and it’s always going to be true throughout the course of the season–that man, we got to continue to find a way to get better and the simple things that we control in all three phases of the game. How do we continue to get better to control those in a better way.”
