Santiago Vescovi out with illness vs. Creighton
Veteran Tennessee guard Santiago Vescovi will miss the No. 2 seed Volunteers’ latest NCAA Tournament game, a Sweet 16 matchup with No. 3 seed Creighton on Friday night, per Volquest. Less than an hour before tip-off, Vescovi was listed as a starter. However, it appears he was not able to play through his illness.
Vescovi’s illness leading into the game wasn’t a secret, as head coach Rick Barnes revealed on Thursday that the fifth-year guard was battling some ailment. Barnes said then that he expected Vescovi to play against the Bluejays.
“Yeah, he’s just under the weather a little bit, but we expect him to be ready,” Barnes said on Thursday.
Evidently, in the 24-plus hours since Barnes spoke to reporters, things deteriorated for Vescovi to the point where he’d be a hindrance and not a help on the floor.
Were Tennessee to win and advance to the Elite 8, Vescovi’s status for a Sunday matchup will then become a major factor for the Volunteers.
Vescovi is a key cog for the Volunteers, starting in all 34 games for Tennessee in 2023-24. The fifth year guard has seen his scoring average almost cut in half, but still plays nearly 26 minutes a night and averages 6.5 points per game, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
The Volunteers and Bluejays are scheduled to tip off right around 10 p.m. EST on Friday evening at Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit.
