Chattanooga (Tenn.) Bradley Central four-star Tennessee commit Boo Carter defined the term ‘athlete’ Friday night with a spectacular 95-yard punt return for a touchdown.

After running backward and scooping up the bouncing punt from the turf at his own 5-yard line, Carter turned around and weaved through defenders en route to a 95-yard touchdown return.

Bradley Central went on to defeat Cleveland (Tenn.) Walker Valley 35-0.

Carter: ‘I feel like I just need to stay home’

Carter committed to Tennessee back in June over Michigan, Colorado, Oregon and Ohio State. After taking trips around the country, his final decision laid in one major factor — he wanted to stay home.

“This whole June has been a hard journey for me because there’s a lot of coaches — even schools not in my top five — trying to get at me,” Carter told On3. “I was just ready to get it over with, and I knew Tennessee was going to be a great place for me to play. I know how they develop players, and I know I can be the next big thing to come out of there. So I feel like I just need to stay home.”

Relationship with Heupel, assistants

Carter built a solid relationship with Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel as well with assistants Tim Banks, Kelsey Pope and Willie Martinez.

“He played a great role in this — him, coach Martinez, coach Banks and coach Pope,” Carter said of Heupel. “Coach Heupel wants me to play offense, but since I got an offer as a DB first, he said I’ll play DB but I can learn the plays to get to offense. He keeps it real, he’s a good coach, and I like how he treats the players. I know I could fit in at that program.”

Carter has made multiple visits to Knoxville and is expected on campus for the Vols’ game against Austin Peay.

Carter is the nation’s No. 208 overall prospect and No. 9 athlete in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 2 player in Tennessee.

Carter currently has an On3 NIL Valuation of $122,000. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
