Tennessee baseball pushes Saturday game vs. Missouri to Sunday doubleheader

Saturday’s baseball contest between Tennessee and Missouri has been postponed due to weather and will be played as a doubleheader on Sunday, according to a release on Twitter from Tennessee baseball. The weather in Columbia on Saturday morning is supposed to be in the low 30s, but it’s expected to warm up a bit on Sunday afternoon, with the weather projected to be in the low 40s and sunny.

Tennessee has started off their season 15-4 overall, but they might still be feeling the effects of a 9-1 loss to Missouri on Friday. The Vols only managed three hits on the afternoon. Before losing to Missouri, the Volunteers had won four straight games, three games against Morehead State and one against Lipscomb. Blake Burke leads Tennessee in home runs with 8 so far this year. He also leads the team with 28 RBIs. Zane Denton is currently tied for second on the Vols with RBIs this year (18).

The Volunteers routed Alabama A&M 23-1. Charlie Taylor went 4-for-5 in that one with 5 RBIs. He also swatted two home runs.

Missouri currently sits at 14-3 overall this year. The Tigers have been hot as of late, winning 12 of their last 13 games. We’ll see what they can do against Tennessee the rest of the weekend when play resumes on Sunday afternoon. Once they finish the doubleheader on Sunday, Missouri will face the Kansas Jayhawks on Wednesday, March 22nd.

Pitcher Chase Dollander currently leads Tennessee in strikeouts with 45. His record this year is currently 3-2 overall. He racked up the preseason accolades for the Vols. Dollander was named the Preseason Pitcher of the Year by Perfect Game for the 2023 campaign. He also earned Preseason All-American honors from D1Baseball.

The Volunteers had a remarkably dominant 2022 season in which they went 57-9 overall, establishing themselves as one of the best teams in college baseball. They won the 2022 SEC Tournament Championship after they defeated the Florida Gators 8-5. The Vols unfortunately had a disappointing showing in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, where they were stunned by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Knoxville Super Regional. Notre Dame came out strong in Game 1 of the best-of-three, but Tennessee forced a Game 3 after winning the second game of the series. In the decisive Game 3, Notre Dame came out on top, advancing to Omaha to the College World Series.
