The No. 1 ranked Tennessee Volunteers (47-7, 24-5) baseball team delivered a historic beatdown of the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Thursday night at Duby Noble Field in Starkville, Mississippi. The Volunteers swatted seven home runs en route to a 27-2 win and hit better than .500 as a team. The 27 runs allowed were the most allowed by Mississippi State in an SEC game since 1943.
Tennessee baseball scored nearly more than three times than the Bulldogs scored against them in their last football matchup on Oct. 12, 2019.
Tennessee got the bats cracking early in this one–Luc Lipcius, Jordan Beck and Drew Gilbert put the Volunteers up 3-0 with back-to-back-to-back homeruns. They hit three homeruns in a 10-pitch span. Not only that, the seven homeruns the Volunteers’ belted on the evening tied a program record. They scored 27 runs on 25 total hits in the game.
Tennessee is currently guaranteed to be the No. 1 overall seed heading into next week’s SEC Tournament. Before the Vols get ready for Hoover, Alabama–they’ve still got two more matchups against Mississippi State before this upcoming Tuesday. Friday’s matchup is set for 7 p.m. EST in Starkville and Game 3 is slated for 3 p.m. EST on Saturday. Both games will be televised on the SEC Network.
