Tennessee defensive back Christian Charles plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he announced on Thursday. Charles is a former four-star recruit.

“Beyond Grateful for my time as a VOL…. KNOXVILLE HAS BEEN GREAT TO ME. I’m thankful for my time spent. But I think it’s time to do what’s best for me and my family! I’ll forever bleed orange GBO,” he wrote in a post on X.

Charles spent three seasons with the Volunteers, spending the last two in particular as a regular staple of the Tennessee defense. His most productive season came in 2022, where he recorded 35 tackles (19 solo). Charles followed that up with a 28-tackle performance in 2024. He did not play during the 2023 season as he was recovering from an Achilles tear.

He will be a redshirt senior for whichever team he decides to play for next. Charles was highly recruited out of high school, logging offers from the likes of Oklahoma, Indiana and Vanderbilt, among several others.

As a four-star recruit, per the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. He was the No. 325 player in the 2021 recruiting class, as well as the No. 25 player at his position.

Tennessee DB John Slaughter plans to enter NCAA transfer portal

Christian Charles isn’t the only Volunteers defensive back set to enter the portal. Tennessee defensive back John Slaughter plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Slaughter contributed six tackles and an interception for the Volunteers during his two seasons on campus. Most of his production came during his sophomore season, where he logged five of those tackles along with the interception.

Before college, Slaughter was a three-star recruit according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. He was the No. 584 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class and the No. 54 safety.
