Tennessee's Neyland Stadium crowd Gator Chomps following Florida upset over Ole Miss
The biggest result on the field on Saturday for Tennessee probably didn’t happen at Neyland Stadium, albeit the Volunteers getting on the way to dispatching UTEP certainly mattered. Instead, the Tennessee faithful was ecstatic after one of their bitter rivals picked up a key SEC win.
That’s because Florida’s 24-17 win over Ole Miss handed the Rebels a third loss and cleared the way for Tennessee to climb back into College Football Playoff contention. And as that result went final with Tennessee leading big over the Miners in the second half, the Neyland Stadium crowd erupted.
Then they started doing the famous Gator Chomp, a nod to the service their long-time SEC rival had just done in helping Tennessee get back into the thick of CFP contention.
With a win over UTEP, Tennessee will move to 9-2 with a game against Vanderbilt remaining. That would set up the Volunteers to finish 10-2 with a win in the finale, placing them firmly amidst the thicket of two-loss SEC teams — Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M — that are pushing for a CFP berth.
And with a berth in the conference title game increasingly unlikely for Tennessee, climbing over the now 8-3 Rebels is a big step up.

It’s also likely a sweet feeling for Tennessee fans, in particular, to see former head coach Lane Kiffin — a not particularly popular character in Knoxville — be on the losing end of the outcome, too.
Tennessee also might’ve gotten a leg up with another early result, as Ohio State swamped Indiana, 38-15, to hand the Hoosiers their first loss in 2024.
So on top of their public show of appreciation for the assist from the Gators, Tennessee faithful might consider a tip of the cap to the Buckeyes, as well — assuming they don’t face off in the first round.
But either way, the sight on Saturday from the orange-clad crowd in Neyland Stadium is not one likely to be replicated any time soon, if ever.
