The Tennessee Volunteers soccer team received their SEC championship rings this week, celebrating their first conference tournament win since 2008. The Vols beat the Arkansas Razorbacks in shutout fashion 3-0 in the title game.

The team gathered for a party on Sunday night to celebrate and reflect on a successful season. They cheered each other on as they received their new rings and showed them off on social media.

The Vols begin the 2022 season with an exhibition game versus Notre Dame on Aug. 9.

Vols clinch SEC tournament title

In the championship game, seniors Wrenne French and Hannah Tillett, along with redshirt sophomore Jaida Thomas, found the net for the Vols. Junior goalkeeper Lindsey Romig recorded four saves in the win.

The championship game was the team’s 18th win of the season, which tied the program record.

“This was a storybook ending to the SEC season for this group. What a complete performance. Our kids came to win, simple as that,” head coach Brian Pensky said after the final whistle. “I could talk forever about all of the individual performances today. There were so many of them.

“However, the strength of this group has consistently been in our numbers – everyone playing their role, doing their part. Our bench energy was phenomenal today, continuously inspiring the kids on the field. And that was a big deal, especially in the first 20 minutes or so of that second half. So, it was just a total collective effort.”

The 3-0 win over Arkansas was the most dominant performance Tennessee has had in an SEC title game. All of their prior SEC title game matches were decided by one point or in penalty kicks.

Following the conference tournament, the Vols moved on to the NCAA tournament. In the first round, Tennessee once again recorded a 3-0 shutout versus Lipscomb. In round two, they took down Washington State 2-0. It was the Michigan Wolverines that sent the Vols home with a 3-0 loss in the third round.
