Tennessee strikes first with pair of two-out, two-run doubles from Katie Taylor, Zaida Puni
No. 4 Tennessee and No. 5 Alabama were in a stalemate following the first inning of their matchup in the Women’s College World Series. That was the case until Volunteer sophomore Katie Taylor got to the plate at the bottom of the second inning.
At that point, Taylor ripped a double when facing two outs from Jaala Torrence. That scored a pair of Tennessee runs to put the Vols up two early against the Crimson Tide in Oklahoma City.
Then, soon after, Zaida Puni kept things rolling for Tennessee with a double of her own that scored two more to put the Volunteers up 4-0 over the Tide.
This was a big stretch for Tennessee as the back of their rotation delivered right before the front got back up to the plate. For Taylor, it was the eighth double of her season. Meanwhile, for Puni, it was her 12th double of her junior campaign.

Weekly spoke on what she and her program are feeling as they prepare for their opening game against Alabama. She described the emotion as ‘just sheer joy’ considering what the Lady Volunteers have done to earn their bid and their chance at a championship.
“(It’s) just joy. That’s the best word I can describe it with. Just sheer joy,” Weekly said. “Joy for these girls who worked so hard. When they do things the right way, as a coach, you just want it so bad for them.”
“Just so much joy for them that they got to move on and they get to come here and do what they do so well, which is just come out and play every day,” said Weekly. “Our last couple practices at home were really good, just like the last few weeks. They just keep getting better every day.”
