Tennessee did not have the season it was hoping to in 2023, but the Vols still have a chance to end the year on a high note with a win over Iowa in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day.

The Vols could have some players opt out of their bowl game for the second consecutive year. Last season, Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman chose to not play in the Orange Bowl against Clemson in order to prepare for the NFL Draft. It remains to be seen what will happen this season, but head coach Josh Heupel recently addressed the possibility of players opting out.

“Well, I think that’s something that typically happens as they get closer to finalizing their decision,” Josh Heupel said. “Last year, we had a good bulk of guys that were going to be in the draft that ultimately participated in the Orange Bowl. This is a great game against a great opponent. Certainly hope that we’ll get a bulk of our guys that are going to help us go be ready to play on January 1.”

As Heupel mentioned, while Hyatt and Tillman opted out last season, several potential NFL Draft picks stayed and played their final game, before turning pro.

Heupel is hoping that that will happen once again, but he acknowledged that right now it’s up in the air.

“As those guys continue to have their conversations and inch closer towards a decision on whether they’re coming back for a year or going into the NFL draft, those are things that you continue to talk about with them at that time,” he said.

Report: Tennessee veteran Keenan Pili expected to return for 2024 season

While some NFL decisions are still being finalized, Tennessee did receive some good news on Tuesday.

Vols linebacker Keenan Pili is expected to return to the program for another season instead of taking his talents to the NFL, according to Matt Zenitz.

Prior to joining Tennessee ahead of last season, Pili spent four seasons with BYU. However, an injury derailed his season with the Volunteers, so it’s looking like the linebacker is back in Knoxville with some unfinished business to take care of.

Throughout his collegiate career, Pili has accumulated 194 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, four pass deflections and a forced fumble.

Earlier in the season, Tennessee leader Josh Heupel commended Pili’s attitude, even though he wasn’t on the field.

“But our young guys are continuing to step up at that position but Keenan, a special leader and has been even while he’s been out. One of the first ones in the building, constantly watching film, I think he’s been a real help to the young guys that are out there on the football field and he’s working his butt off to get back as soon as possible and obviously we feel like he’s a difference maker,” Heupel said, earlier this year.

Tennessee will be happy to hear Keenan Pili is returning, and excited to slot him into their defense for 2024.
