Following Tennessee’s loss to LSU, head coach Tony Vitello broke down the play of pitcher Andrew Lindsey.

As Vitello explained, he thought LSU did what you need to against Lindsey, in terms of approach, but that Lindsey was still solid in his outing.

“He was good,” Tony Vitello said. “I mean, they did what you’ve got to do against a guy like Lindsey. He’s a heavy ground-ball guy. He mixes well himself. They had the one big swing. I don’t know what we did to Gavin [Guidry], but he hates us.”

Vitello admitted that Guidry has had Tennessee’s number this season. However, he didn’t think that the rest of the LSU lineup was too much to handle.

“And I’m only speaking in brevity, the best I can do. He’s done well against us the four games we’ve played this year,” Vitello said. “But other than that swing, they kind of just — I don’t want to say nickel and dime — they took what they could get off of him and found some holes and were able to accumulate some things.”

He went on to explain that he thought Andrew Lindsey pitched well, he had to make decisions based on how the game was going.

“I’d love for you all to come over to the hotel and replay the game like a video game and make decisions, but when you’re going on the fly there, we treated that situation where [Aaron] Combsy came in as almost like a ninth-inning type situation because, just to be frank, because of the guy that we were facing on their side of things. But I thought he threw the ball good.”

Tony Vitello on the approach against Paul Skenes

Tennessee struggled against Paul Skenes on Saturday night. As Tony Vitello admitted, he was just better than the Volunteers.

“We finished that weekend off very well on Sunday, but if you date back to Friday or Game 1 of that deal, Skenes was better than us,” Tony Vitello said. “And I think there’s probably some info in there that we can pull out, and the guys can take some confidence in maybe we’ve seen him once before.”

If Tennessee pulls itself out of the loser bracket, the Volunteers are going to need to figure out how to beat Skenes.

“He is probably a different pitcher now than he was then. It’s probably a different LSU team in some areas. I mean, they still have Mr. [Dylan] Crews and all that. We’re a different team too. You want to have some preparation going into the deal and see what will be similar from that weekend and maybe try and get a head start on what could be different, but I also feel like this is a place where you don’t know what’s going to happen.”
