Trey Lipscomb makes Tennessee baseball history with Thursday home run
This season has been a special one for the Tennessee Volunteers baseball team, and that is especially true for senior infielder Trey Lipscomb. On Thursday night, Lipscomb’s historic season continued in a series-opening victory over Georgia.
In the bottom of the second inning with no outs, Lipscomb launched the 0-1 pitch into left-center, and the ball continued to carry over the wall for the home run. The long ball broke the scoreless tie, giving Tennessee the early 1-0 lead.
Thursday’s home run was Lipscomb’s 20th of the season. He became the first Tennessee player since 2009 to hit 20 home runs in a single season. Tennessee went on to defeat Georgia 5-2 on Thursday night. Game two of the series is set for 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday night.
On the season, Lipscomb has played in 50 games for Tennessee, all of which have been starts. He has hit 20 home runs with 70 RBI, hitting for an impressive average of .353. Lipscomb has also walked 20 times and been hit five times, compared to 25 strikeouts at the plate. He has reached base at a .423 clip, and is slugging .781 on the year.

Lipscomb’s emergence has been a welcome development for Tennessee. As a freshman in 2019, he hit just .071 in 14 at-bats. He then hit .269 in 26 at-bats in 2020, and .310 as a junior in 2021 in 29 at-bats. Entering the season, Lipscomb had just two home runs and 19 RBI. He has blown past those totals, and there is still time left on the schedule to add to his already impressive totals.
Tennessee lost its first weekend series of the year last weekend to Kentucky, but bounced back with a midweek victory over Bellarmine on Tuesday. The Volunteers sit at 44-6 overall and 21-4 against SEC opponents following Thursday night’s win.
Even after losing a series last weekend, Tennessee remained in the top spot in the latest D1Baseball Top 25 rankings.
