The more you watch sports, the more you see rare rules pop up you never knew existed. In Friday night’s highly-anticipated VanderbiltTennessee baseball matchup in Nashville, the Volunteers got the bad end of a controversial ruling. Tennessee’s Jordan Beck hit a home run in the first inning. The problem was after he hit it out of the park, rounded the bases, and touched home plate, the umpires in the game ruled that it wasn’t a home run. Check out the controversial play by Beck below.

There was a ruling that Beck had used an illegal bat when he hit the home run. Then, Volunteers manager Tony Vitello had some words with the umpire.

One thing is for certain. This is going to be a wild, wild series with controversial rulings like tonight’s illegal bat ruling. The game is currently being nationally televised on ESPN.

The Tennessee Volunteers have been having an unreal season

Tennessee baseball is currently ranked as the No. 1 team in America and they’ve been playing like it. The Vols currently own a 24-1 overall record and their offensive stats through those 25 games are staggering. The Volunteers are averaging .338, they’ve scored 277 runs, hit 66 home runs, 153 extra base hits, and have a slugging percentage of .682. They lead the nation in home runs–the next closest team to them are the Mercer Bears with 50 home runs.

Tennessee is currently 6-0 in SEC play and they appear to be well on their way to 7-0 after Friday night. The Volunteers have throttled a number of their opponents by double digits this season and they look like they are poised to contend for the national title in Omaha at the end of the season. Tennessee defeated Iona 27-1 and then in the next game throttled them 29-0. The Vols’ only loss came on March 4, when they lost to the Texas Longhorns 7-2.

Tennessee is set to take on Vanderbilt on Saturday and Sunday to finish off the series this weekend.
