Things had been going well for Tennessee early in their matchup against Akron. The offense had been rolling, getting 21 points thus far in the second quarter. Even the defense was performing well, shutting out the Zips.

However, things have taken a turn for the worst on the injury front. Star wide receiver Cedrick Tillman took a hit while in the air and immediately went down with what looks like a lower-body injury. He was not able to get up, as the Tennessee training staff rushed onto the field.

When leaping up to get a pass, the Akron defender went for the tackle. His leg came down in a funny way, causing the injury. Although Tillman was able to walk off under his own power, there was a noticeable limp and he went straight to the medical tent.

The ESPN broadcast provided an update on Tillman shortly after the injury. After walking out of the tent, the wide receiver said “I’m good.” However, he will be out for the remainder of the game and will not return.

Tillman was not able to make the impact he usually does on a game before being ruled out with an injury. He only had two receptions for 16 yards and will end his night there. There was no touchdown either for the wide receiver but his focus will be on getting healthy heading into the Florida matchup.

Brady Quinn picks Tennessee as CFP candidate

While picking teams to watch for the College Football Playoff, former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn picked Tennessee as his dark horse. Despite playing in the competitive SEC and having games on their schedule this year including Alabama and Georgia, Quinn claimed that the Volunteers could survive their schedule and be looking at a CFP bid.

“You guys are gonna think I’m crazy in saying this, but I love what Tennessee has done so far,” said Quinn on Big Noon Kickoff. “Building off of the foundation they laid last year now. You look at Hendon Hooker, their quarterback — he’s averaging almost 300 total yards per game, six total touchdowns this season. He’s gonna be a big reason why if they can make a run through a gauntlet of a schedule.

“Got a great win last week versus Pitt, a top-25 team on the road. Now they’ve gotta play Florida, they’ve gotta go to Baton Rogue, they’ve gotta play Alabama and Georgia … bottom line is though, if they can get through that schedule, they’ll be in the conversation.”
