Analyzing Texas A&M fans worst case scenario following Week 1 game
From a public perspective, last season seemed to be the worst case scenario for Texas A&M after falling just short of the College Football Playoff the previous year. But can things get any worse?
According to On3’s JD PicKell, it can — even in blowout fashion. It’s no surprise Aggie fans want to make the quick jump back to national prominence, but after last year’s 5-7 season, head coach Jimbo Fisher and company will be under a microscope in 2023.
PicKell’s scenario is sure to have message boards lighting up if Week 1 pans out the way he thinks it might.
“What if Texas A&M doesn’t score 35 against New Mexico? There was so much made about what Jimbo Fisher didn’t do last year,” PicKell said on Andy Staples’ podcast. “You bring in Bobby Petrino as the offensive coordinator and you think that this is the fix.
“So much talent, you’ve got Conner Weigman, we saw what he can do toward the end of last year. If you go out and don’t perform the way you’re supposed to against New Mexico — even if you’re in the game at 35-0, you’ll think, ‘Man, we couldn’t hang 40 on this team? But when we get to the SEC, what is this going to look like?”
If that ends up being the case, PicKell wants to reminded Aggie fans out there that the sky won’t fall if their team doesn’t beat New Mexico by five or more touchdowns. But, there certainly will be some unhappy fans on message boards directly after the game.

So, how can the Aggies prevent this? As PicKell pointed out, everything starts with the offense. We know what Texas A&M has at quarterback — Weigman’s QB battle was extensively covered this offseason — but who are his weapons?
Ainias Smith, Evan Stewart and Moose Muhammad III — combined for 106 receptions for 1,550 yards and eight touchdowns. They made up for nearly all of the wide receiving production from a year ago, and are expected to build on those numbers in 2023.
On top of Texas A&M’s personnel, Scarborough also pointed out that the Aggies will be favored during all of their early-season matchups. That includes opening matchups against New Mexico, Miami, ULM and Auburn.
An undefeated start would already put the Aggies in a better position than they were in last year — and following those first four games with home matchups against both Arkansas and Alabama — Texas A&M still needs to be on the tracks when October rolls around.
