Texas A&M star Braden Montgomery was lost for the season when he was injured sliding into home plate in the first game of the College Station Super Regional.

In the first inning, no less.

It was a bang-bang play at the plate, with a throw from the outfield arriving home just ahead of Montgomery and perhaps impressing upon the Aggies superstar a sense of urgency to get into his slide.

The slide didn’t go well, with Montgomery’s right foot catching and the throw beating him to the plate. Insult to injury.

“Yeah I mean it happened so fast,” said Oregon outfielder Anson Aroz. “Ball shows up in my side of the field and I’ve got to make a play on it. Made a good throw and had Bennett Thompson on the other end who delivered a good tag. Didn’t see it, obviously a tough angle from the outfield.”

After the play, Braden Montgomery remained on the ground for about two minutes as the medical staff tended to him. Eventually an air cast was applied to his lower right leg and Montgomery was helped to his feet, able to make it to the dugout while supported on either side.

He would watch the rest of the game from the dugout.

Players and coaches on both sides hurt for the star, who has been one of the best college baseball players all season long.

“As coach said, hard to see a player like that go down,” Aroz said. “As somebody that’s battled a lot of injuries I feel for him and only wish him the best.”

Braden Montgomery was hitting .322 on the season, having racked up 27 home runs, 85 RBI, 14 doubles and a triple. He had also drawn 53 walks, so he’s incredibly proficient at getting on base. Texas A&M will miss him.

The good news for the Aggies is that they were able to rally and beat the Ducks 10-6 in the opening game of the Super Regional. They now stand just one more win away from Omaha and a trip to the College World Series.

Game 2 will be played at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 on Sunday.
